Women have been urged to take bold steps toward advancing equality in governance, leadership, and socio-economic empowerment to create an enabling environment where they can thrive.
The call was made at the Women for Liberty Conference 2025, a two-day gathering dedicated to promoting liberty, inclusion, and human dignity.
According to a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Wednesday, the conference was organised by Women for Liberty Africa (WFLA) in partnership with the United States-based Atlas Network. The event brought together over 200 women leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and social innovators in Ibadan, Oyo State, on December 11–12.
Women as Drivers of Sustainable Progress
In her welcome address, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of WFLA, Lilian David, stressed that freedom is inseparable from human dignity. She urged participants to view women not merely as beneficiaries of development initiatives, but as active architects of sustainable social and economic progress.
Key Conversations and Panel Sessions
Discussions at the conference centred on restoring women’s agency across governance, enterprise, and community development.
The “Policy by Women, For Women” session underscored the critical role of women in policymaking and governance, while the “Digital Tools for Change” panel examined how technology can amplify women’s voices and deepen their participation in public discourse.
Speaking during the digital engagement session, Oluwatobi Shitta noted that digital tools are more than instruments of convenience, describing them as powerful enablers of dignity and civic participation. She explained that strategic use of social media, digital storytelling, and data-driven advocacy allows women to shape their narratives, challenge stereotypes, mobilise communities, and engage policymakers more effectively.
Practical Sessions and Empowerment Initiatives
One of the conference’s hands-on segments was the Community Project Design Workshop, facilitated by the WFLA founder, which guided participants on transforming innovative ideas into sustainable community initiatives.
Keynote addresses were delivered by Oluwakemi Irinoye, Ronke Giwa, and Chioma Fakorede, who spoke on entrepreneurship, innovation, and women’s mental health as essential pillars of leadership and personal empowerment.
Innovation, Recognition, and Awards
A major highlight of the event was the Innovation Hub Pitch Session, where participants presented project ideas to donors, mentors, and potential collaborators. Several women secured grants, mentorship opportunities, and strategic support for their initiatives.
The conference concluded with a Dinner and Awards Night held at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Ibadan, and chaired by civic leader Akeem Agbaje. CraigXplore was recognised as the Star Sponsor, reflecting strong private-sector support for women’s empowerment and leadership development.
