Hundreds of prominent women, including former heads of state, prime ministers and Nobel Peace Prize laureates, have called on the Iranian government to release a 67-year-old women’s rights activist amid fears that her death sentence could be carried out.
In an open letter addressed to Iranian authorities, the women expressed deep concern over the reported death sentence imposed on Zahra Tabari, which they described as the outcome of a “sham trial that lasted just ten minutes.”
According to the letter, Tabari was sentenced to death in October following legal proceedings that rights groups say fell far short of international standards of justice. Iranian authorities have yet to officially confirm the sentence.
Reports indicate that Tabari was accused of possessing a document that encouraged civilians, particularly women, to resist the social and political pressures they face in Iran.
She is also alleged to have links to the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), a group banned by the Iranian government.
The signatories urged the international community and human rights organizations to intensify pressure on Tehran to halt any execution and ensure a fair judicial process for Tabari, warning that her case highlights growing concerns over the treatment of activists and women’s rights defenders in Iran.
