On Friday, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu called on the country’s governors to comply with the Supreme Court’s order granting local governments the autonomy to manage their finances.
The President warned the governors that if they failed to obey the order, he would be forced to enact a law giving him the power to send funds directly to local governments from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).
Tinubu issued the warning during the 15th meeting of the APC Executive Council in Abu.
Tinubu’s Warning
President Tinubu, speaking sternly to the governors, emphasized that his administration must ensure compliance with the country’s courts.
“The Supreme Court has given you an order stating that you must release funds directly to local governments. If you refuse, I will have no choice but to use the President’s law, for all powers rest with me, and I will enforce it.
“I am appealing to you personally, as my governors. But if you do not begin to implement this order step by step, you will see what will happen,” Tinubu said.
On July 11, 2024, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the federal government’s request, affirming that local governments in Nigeria should have the autonomy to manage their finances.
All seven justices agreed that withholding local government funds by state governments violates the provisions of the national constitution.
