Former United States President Donald Trump has once again suggested that the US should annex Greenland, insisting the move is necessary for national security—despite strong objections from Denmark and Greenland’s leadership.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said the United States “needs Greenland from the standpoint of national security,” reviving a controversial position he has repeatedly expressed over the years.
Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and holds strategic importance due to its Arctic location and vast reserves of critical minerals.
Greenland Rejects Annexation Talk
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens Frederik Nielsen, dismissed Trump’s remarks, describing the idea of US control over the island as unrealistic.
“That’s enough now,” Nielsen said. “No more pressure. No more insinuations. No more fantasies of annexation.”
He stressed that while Greenland remains open to dialogue and cooperation, any discussions must respect international law and established diplomatic channels.
“We are open to dialogue. We are open to discussions. But this must happen with respect for international law,” he added.
Denmark Pushes Back
Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, also condemned Trump’s comments, stating clearly that the United States has no legal basis to annex Greenland or any other part of the Danish kingdom.
“The US has no right to annex any of the three nations in the Danish kingdom,” Frederiksen said.
She emphasized that Denmark—and by extension Greenland—is a member of NATO and is already protected under the alliance’s collective security guarantees. Frederiksen also noted that a defence agreement granting the US military access to Greenland is already in place.
Social Media Sparks Diplomatic Tension
Tensions escalated after Katie Miller, the wife of Trump’s senior aide Stephen Miller, shared a social media post showing a map of Greenland coloured like the American flag, accompanied by the word “SOON.”
The Danish ambassador to the US responded with what he called a “friendly reminder” that Denmark and the United States are allies, adding that Denmark expects respect for its territorial integrity.
Broader Concerns Over US Foreign Policy
The renewed Greenland controversy comes amid heightened global concern following a major US military operation in Venezuela, which reportedly resulted in the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and their transfer to New York.
Trump later claimed the US would “run” Venezuela and allow American oil companies to operate there, comments that have further alarmed international observers.
Analysts say these developments have reignited fears that the US could consider using force to secure control over Greenland—something Trump has previously refused to rule out.
Strategic Importance of Greenland
Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland’s strategic Arctic location and its abundance of minerals critical to advanced technologies make it vital to US security interests.
However, the Trump administration’s recent decision to appoint a special envoy to Greenland has drawn sharp criticism in Denmark.
Greenland, home to about 57,000 people, has enjoyed extensive self-government since 1979, although Denmark retains control over defence and foreign affairs.
While many Greenlanders support eventual independence from Denmark, opinion polls consistently show overwhelming opposition to becoming part of the United States.
