Sources say the New York City mayor and the former president have been in regular, friendly contact since a November White House meeting
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and former US President Donald Trump have been exchanging text messages at least twice a week, according to sources — an unexpected line of communication that suggests a quiet but growing rapport between two figures from opposite ends of the political spectrum.
Sources told The Post that the former Astoria lawmaker and the Queens-born ex-president have remained in semi-regular contact since a cordial White House meeting in November. Their conversations reportedly span a broad range of issues, from the potential ouster of Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro to zoning regulations and real estate red tape in New York City.
“Friendly” tone, careful optics
Insiders familiar with the exchanges described the tone of the messages as “friendly,” though both men are said to be cautious about appearances.
“It wouldn’t make practical or political sense for them to scream at each other — in public or private,” a political insider said. “That said, they also can’t appear too cozy.”
The frequency and directness of the communication mark a sharp break from how recent New York City mayors have interacted with sitting or former presidents.
A departure from recent history
Even Mayor Eric Adams, Mamdani’s immediate predecessor, who openly sought Trump’s favor and made a late-night dash to Washington, DC, to attend his inauguration last year, reportedly relied on intermediaries rather than direct contact.
Political observers say Trump’s apparent comfort level with Mamdani is especially notable given his past relationships with progressive city leaders.
‘Remarkable’ connection
Andrew Kirtzman, CEO of strategic communications firm KSX, described the dynamic as unusual.
“It’s remarkable that Trump feels so comfortable with Mamdani,” Kirtzman said. “He hated Bill de Blasio, the last left-wing mayor, and likely felt alienated from the city because of it.”
Kirtzman added that Trump appears to feel a personal or emotional connection with the current mayor.
“Mamdani must be totally amazed by what’s happening.”
