Former U.S. president says peace process could move quickly but sets no deadline
Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday said he believes “the makings of a deal” are in place to end the war between Ukraine and Russia, expressing optimism ahead of high-level talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
Speaking to reporters before meeting Zelensky, Trump warned that failure to reach an agreement could result in the deaths of “millions more people,” stressing the urgency of a negotiated settlement.
“I do believe that we have the makings of a deal. It’s good for Ukraine, good for everybody. It’s very important,” Trump said outside the main dining room at Mar-a-Lago.
Trump added that ending the conflict was his top priority, calling it the most challenging diplomatic effort he has faced.
“There’s nothing more important,” he said. “I solved eight wars, and this is the most difficult one.”
No Fixed Timeline, But Optimism Remains
While expressing confidence in progress, Trump declined to set a specific deadline for finalizing a peace agreement.
“It’s pretty complex, but not that complex,” he said. “No deadlines. My deadline is getting the war ended.”
Trump said discussions with Zelensky focused on unresolved issues within a 20-point peace framework developed by both sides’ negotiating teams. He suggested that momentum from the talks could accelerate the peace process.
“I think it’s going to move very rapidly,” Trump said.
Outreach to Russia and European Leaders
Trump also revealed plans to speak directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as key European leaders, to advance the proposed settlement.
The meeting at Mar-a-Lago comes amid continued fighting in Ukraine and growing international pressure to find a diplomatic resolution to the nearly three-year-long conflict.
