The announcement has sparked fresh criticism from Democrats, following recent controversy over the use of Trump’s name on major national institutions.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that a new class of American battleships will be named after him, marking a rare move in U.S. military history.
Speaking at an event held at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Navy Secretary John Phelan described the vessels as “Trump-class battleships,” revealing that the first ship in the series will be called USS Defiant.
Phelan said the warship would be “the largest, deadliest, most versatile and best-looking warship on the world’s oceans.”
According to officials, the Trump-class battleships will feature advanced military technology, including conventional guns and missiles, hypersonic weapons, electronic rail guns, and high-powered laser systems. The ships are also expected to have nuclear capabilities.
The announcement comes amid growing political debate, with Democrats raising concerns over what they describe as the politicisation of national institutions and the U.S. military.
