Tension gripped parts of Osogbo metropolis on Sunday following the killing of a former unit chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Kazeem Oyewole, by suspected hoodlums.
Oyewole, who served as the part-time chairman of the NURTW Aregbe Unit between 2018 and 2022, was reportedly attacked and killed in the afternoon at Elelede Junction, Osogbo. His death sparked fear and unrest across several motor parks in the city.
Panic in Motor Parks
Following the incident, individuals believed to be associates of the deceased were seen moving around major motor parks in Osogbo, allegedly searching for those responsible for the killing. This development heightened tension in areas such as Old Garage and Aregbe motor park, where commuters and traders reportedly avoided lingering for fear of reprisal attacks.
Security presence was also observed around the motor parks as authorities monitored the situation.
Eyewitness Account
Details surrounding Oyewole’s death remain unclear. However, a resident who witnessed the incident from a distance, and requested anonymity for safety reasons, told The PUNCH that the attackers had earlier mounted an illegal checkpoint at Elelede Junction.
According to the resident, the hoodlums were allegedly collecting money from passersby under the guise of raising funds for a proposed carnival when a motorcycle carrying two passengers arrived at the scene.
“They forced the two passengers to disembark and began to attack them. I heard gunshots. Later, they identified one of the victims as Kazeem. They brought big stones and smashed his head. He died on the spot,” the witness said.
The second passenger reportedly escaped with injuries, while the attackers fled before the arrival of security operatives.
Businesses Shut Down
A shop owner at Elelede Junction, identified simply as Basira, said the violence forced several business owners to shut down operations abruptly.
“People ran for safety when the crisis started. Later, some NURTW members came and identified the deceased as Kazeem Oyewole, a former part-time chairman of the union along the Osogbo–Gbongan Road in the Aregbe area,” she said.
Police Confirm Incident
Confirming the incident, the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abiodun Ojelabi, said the command had commenced an investigation.
“We are aware of the incident that occurred at Orita Elelede, Osogbo. Our men were deployed immediately after the information reached us, but unfortunately, one person was confirmed dead. He was identified as Kazeem; other name unknown. Investigation has commenced,” Ojelabi said.
He added that security operatives were monitoring motor parks across the state to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
Related Incident
The killing comes barely months after another NURTW leader in Osun State, Adeboye Ademoroti, was shot dead on November 27, 2025, in Ilesa by unknown assailants.
At the time, security sources told PUNCH Metro that Ademoroti and another individual were attacked by gunmen at the Olomilagbala area of Ilesa, though the circumstances surrounding the incident remained unclear.
