Moscow says all drones were intercepted as Kyiv dismisses the allegation as pretext for retaliation
Russia on Monday claimed that Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack overnight on an official residence linked to President Vladimir Putin, deploying more than 90 drones that were all intercepted by Russian air defenses.
According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the drones were shot down before reaching their targets, and no casualties or damage were reported. It remains unclear whether President Putin was present at the residence at the time of the alleged attack.
Ukraine has firmly denied the accusation. President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected Moscow’s claims, accusing the Kremlin of laying the groundwork for retaliatory strikes on Kyiv. Zelensky suggested the allegation was politically motivated, coming just a day after his high-profile meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago on Sunday.
Lavrov said the incident would prompt Russia to reassess its negotiating position in ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the nearly four-year-old war in Ukraine, raising concerns about renewed escalation in the conflict.
As of Monday, no independent verification of Russia’s claims had been provided, and Ukrainian officials insist Kyiv was not involved in any attack on Putin’s residence.
