Russia and China on Tuesday sharply criticized the United States over what they described as escalating military and economic pressure on Venezuela, accusing Washington of intimidation and “cowboy behavior” during an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
The meeting was convened at Venezuela’s request, with the support of Moscow and Beijing. Addressing the council, Venezuela’s representative accused the United States of carrying out what he called “the greatest extortion known in our history.”
Tensions have risen following the deployment of significant U.S. naval forces to the Caribbean and the interception of oil tankers as part of what Washington describes as enforcement of sanctions against Venezuelan vessels. Caracas and its allies argue that these actions amount to an unlawful naval blockade.
Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, said the U.S. measures violated fundamental principles of international law, describing the blockade as an “act of aggression.”
China echoed Russia’s concerns, warning against unilateral actions. “China opposes all forms of unilateralism and bullying, and supports all countries in defending their sovereignty and national dignity,” said Chinese representative Sun Lei.
