Resident Doctors Suspend Planned Strike Following Vice-President Shettima’s Intervention

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced the suspension of its planned strike, which was set to commence on January 12, 2026.

In a statement released on Sunday, January 11, Shuaibu Ibrahim, Secretary-General of NARD, confirmed that the decision was reached during the association’s National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting.

The association had initially declared the strike following its emergency council meeting on January 2, citing unresolved demands. However, a national industrial court injunction issued on January 9 in Abuja had already restrained members from embarking on any industrial action.

According to Ibrahim, the latest suspension came after thorough review of the association’s demands and progress made through ongoing engagement with key stakeholders, including intervention by Vice-President Kashim Shettima.

“Following firm commitments from critical stakeholders, the planned strike has been suspended,” Ibrahim stated.

Key Developments Addressed by NARD:

  • Implementation of Previous Committee Report: The federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMoH&SW) report has been fully executed.
  • New Reconciliation Committee: A committee comprising CCMDs, FMoH&SW, and NARD has been formed to ensure members remain at FTH Lokoja and to foster harmony between ARD FTH Lokoja and MDCAN FTH Lokoja.
  • Payroll and Payment Follow-Up: Verified staff lists have been submitted to IPPIS, with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment coordinating with the Ministry of Finance. NARD is actively ensuring prompt salary payments.
  • Clarification on Entry-Level Status: The Director of Hospital Services at FMoH&SW will liaise with hospital executives following guidance from the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF), confirming that CONMESS 3 remains the recognized entry-level grade.

NARD emphasized that the association will continue close engagement with relevant authorities to ensure timely resolution of pending issues and sustained harmony within the medical workforce.
