Morgan Rogers Double Sinks Manchester United as Aston Villa Stay on Leaders’ Heels

There appears to be no stopping this Aston Villa machine. Perfectly engineered under Unai Emery, its cylinders continue to fire relentlessly. When Morgan Rogers struck the decisive goal against Manchester United, Emery’s reaction said it all — the Villa manager launched his jacket skywards as Villa Park erupted.

“Birmingham, are you listening?” rang out from the stands, and with good reason. This was more than just another victory. It was a statement.

Villa remain third in the Premier League, just three points behind leaders Arsenal, firmly entrenched in the title race. Two sublime goals from Rogers secured a 10th consecutive win in all competitions, rendering Matheus Cunha’s fine equaliser little more than a footnote. For United boss Ruben Amorim, the frustration deepened when captain Bruno Fernandes was forced off injured at half-time.

A Breathless Opening

The match was always likely to be high-octane, and it did not disappoint. Inside three minutes, Cunha unleashed a rasping first-time effort that flew narrowly wide of Emiliano Martínez’s post. Villa responded swiftly through Ollie Watkins, but his hesitation after cutting inside Leny Yoro allowed Ayden Heaven to recover.

Opportunities came thick and fast. After Youri Tielemans nicked possession from Manuel Ugarte, John McGinn tested Senne Lammens, with Watkins denied again from the rebound. From the resulting corner, Ian Maatsen’s volley flashed inches wide via a flick off Rogers’ heel.

United were equally threatening. Benjamin Šeško squandered two big chances in quick succession — Martínez spread himself brilliantly to deny the first, while a heavy touch after rounding the goalkeeper ruined the second.

Rogers Makes His Mark

Villa Park buzzed with intensity. McGinn wriggled free from three United shirts, Tielemans thundered into Yoro, and even a bout of pantomime grappling between Yoro and Martínez at a corner added to the spectacle.

Rogers, however, was warming up for something special. In the 33rd minute, he drove inside Yoro and tested Lammens with a tame effort — a warning shot. Moments before half-time, the real damage was done.

Keeping McGinn’s overhit pass in play near the left touchline, Rogers drifted inside, glanced up, and curled a sublime strike into the far corner. Lammens could only watch as the net rippled. Even referee Michael Oliver, courtesy of the “ref cam” replays, seemed to have the perfect view.

Cunha Responds, United Reshuffle

Just when it looked like Villa would head into the break ahead, United struck back. In first-half stoppage time, Patrick Dorgu dispossessed Matty Cash and Cunha pounced, finishing emphatically despite Konsa’s warning gestures to Martínez. The Brazilian celebrated by “surfing” in front of the Holte End as parity was restored.

United were forced into a change at the interval, with Fernandes unable to continue. Lisandro Martínez came on to partner Ugarte at the base of midfield. Kobbie Mainoo was already absent with a calf injury, sustained in training, further adding to Amorim’s woes.

“To have this problem is a reminder that we must focus on what we can control and leave the rest to destiny,” Amorim reflected.

Rogers Delivers the Decisive Blow

United began the second half brightly, with Lisandro Martínez rattling the advertising boards from distance after stealing the ball from the otherwise impeccable Boubacar Kamara.

But Villa — and Rogers — were ruthless. Tielemans kept the ball alive near the byline and swung a cross toward Watkins. Though the striker couldn’t control it, Rogers was alert, drifting inside Yoro once more before expertly finding the far corner again.

Cunha later spurned a golden chance to equalise, hesitating with time and space inside the box, and Villa held firm to seal another famous victory.

Villa March On

With momentum building and belief surging, Emery’s side continue to chase the Premier League summit. For Morgan Rogers, this was a night to remember — and for Aston Villa, another powerful reminder that they are very much part of the title conversation.
