Military Sustains Pressure on Fleeing Insurgents in Borno

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have clashed with fleeing terrorists in Borno State, resulting in multiple casualties on both sides.

The engagement followed a clearance operation across key terrorist strongholds, including Tergejeri, Chiralia, and Ajigin/Abirma, aimed at dismantling insurgent networks in the region.

Significant Operational Gains

According to Lt. Col. Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of OPHK, troops have advanced deep into the Timbuktu Triangle, achieving major operational success and weakening terrorist positions.

“Troops successfully cleared and dominated key locations across the triangle, including Tergejeri, Chiralia, and Ajigin/Abirma. During the operations, intermittent contact with fleeing terrorist elements resulted in heavy neutralisation of their forces,” Lt. Col. Uba said.

VBIED Attack and Casualties

On 20 January 2026, while consolidating near a harbour approximately 6 km north of Chiralia, troops encountered two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs).

  • One VBIED was neutralised by troops’ swift action.
  • The second VBIED breached the defensive line, affecting some logistics platforms.

Tragically, several soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) lost their lives, while others sustained injuries. The wounded were promptly evacuated by Nigerian Army Aviation helicopters to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital, with Nigerian Air Force platforms providing overwatch to ensure safety.

Discovery of Mass Graves

In a further blow to terrorists, troops discovered mass graves containing around 20 bodies of insurgents killed in earlier encounters. Lt. Col. Uba stated this discovery highlights the heavy losses suffered by terrorists and discredits their propaganda narratives.

Stability Maintained

Despite ongoing operations, the security situation across the theatre remains generally stable. Troops continue to press on fleeing terrorist elements, with morale and combat efficiency at high levels.

“Troops of OPHK remain resolute in their commitment to protect civilians, dismantle terrorist networks, and restore lasting peace and security across the North East,” the statement concluded.
