Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf may be struggling with his conscience over his ties to the Kwankwasiyya Movement, according to Magaji Mato, SAN, the National Legal Adviser of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Mato made the comments on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Wednesday, following Yusuf’s defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Recently, Yusuf and other defectors were seen wearing the red cap of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, claiming they still identify with the movement.
But Mato warned that the red cap is more than a fashion statement—it represents a political ideology founded by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
“The red cap is the signature of Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya Movement. If you wear it while joining a party with an opposing ideology, you have yourself to answer,” he said.
“It’s not just about the red cap—it’s about the ideology behind it. You cannot be a follower of Kwankwaso and support a party that contradicts that ideology. It’s impossible.”
Mato added that politicians wearing the red cap while in other parties may struggle to distance themselves from the movement that launched their careers.
“Perhaps their conscience is weighing on them. It’s hard to break away from the roots that brought them to prominence. Governor Yusuf’s rise was powered by Kwankwaso’s ideology. He wasn’t voted in alone—it was Kwankwaso, and I believe even Yusuf would acknowledge that,” Mato said.
His comments highlight the tension between symbolic loyalty and political realignment, showing that the Kwankwasiyya Movement remains a powerful force in Kano State politics.
