The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced moves to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara, following a dramatic resumption of plenary on Thursday.
The House, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, reversed its earlier decision to reconvene on January 26, opting instead for an earlier sitting. The development was communicated to lawmakers through an internal memo signed by the Clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi.
Assembly Reconvenes Earlier Than Scheduled
The memo, dated January 5, stated:
“By the leave of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, DSSRS, and in line with Order 4, Rule 3 of the Standing Orders of the Rivers State House of Assembly (1999), members are hereby informed that the House will reconvene for plenary on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 10:00am.
Consequently, members are expected to treat this information with utmost importance and attend accordingly.”
Notice of Allegations Read at Plenary
During the plenary session, presided over by Speaker Amaewhule, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, formally read a notice of allegations and gross misconduct leveled against Governor Fubara.
The lawmakers accused the governor of converting state funds into foreign currency and allegedly paying individuals in Abuja to influence President Bola Tinubu to intervene and prevent the Assembly from summoning him to present the 2025 budget.
26 Lawmakers Sign Impeachment Notice
A total of 26 members of the Assembly signed the notice, which they said was issued in accordance with constitutional provisions.
Speaker Amaewhule announced that the notice of allegations would be served on Governor Fubara within the next seven days, in line with legislative procedures.
Deputy Governor Also Accused
Similarly, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, read out a separate notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu during the session.
The development signals a major escalation in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, with the impeachment process now formally underway.
