Israel Says Troops Will Not Fully Withdraw from Gaza

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, has said that Israeli forces will not completely pull out of the Gaza Strip, a decision analysts say could undermine the United States–backed peace plan for the region.

Addressing leaders of Jewish settler communities, Katz said that when the time comes, Israel would establish a military force rather than selecting from among displaced Palestinians.

The move would effectively cement a long-term presence for settlers who have lived in the area for more than 20 years. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly expressed support for expanding Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip.
