Tehran — Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reportedly moved into a fortified underground bunker following warnings from senior military officials about a heightened risk of imminent US airstrikes.
According to a report by Iran International, cited by the Jerusalem Post, the 86-year-old leader relocated to a secure shelter in Tehran linked to an extensive network of underground tunnels. The move reportedly came as tensions between Tehran and Washington escalated sharply.
Rising Military Tensions
Iranian officials are said to have assessed the likelihood of US military action as high after President Donald Trump announced on Friday that American warships were heading to the Middle East. Trump described the deployment as a “massive armada,” signaling a warning to Tehran amid an increasingly hostile exchange between the two countries.
The USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group — comprising the aircraft carrier and three destroyers — is currently en route from the Indian Ocean to the Persian Gulf region, according to Stars and Stripes.
Power Delegated to Son
The report further claims that Khamenei has delegated day-to-day administrative responsibilities to his youngest son, Masoud Khamenei, 53, during his absence from public view.
Masoud Khamenei is said to be serving as the primary communication link between the supreme leader and Iran’s executive branch, handling emergency coordination within the government.
Iran Issues Strong Warnings
Despite the reported move underground, Iranian authorities have publicly maintained a defiant stance. President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that any attack on the supreme leader by the United States or Israel would be regarded as “an all-out war against us.”
In a similar warning, Iran’s parliamentary national security commission stated that any strike targeting Khamenei would prompt a declaration of jihad, according to the Iranian Students News Agency, as reported by the Jerusalem Post.
Silence on Social Media
Khamenei, who is typically active on social media, has not posted on X since January 17. However, it remains unclear when he allegedly entered hiding.
