Rep. Ilhan Omar (D–Minn.) is facing renewed scrutiny after a conservative watchdog group confirmed it is examining her finances amid mounting outrage over massive fraud in Minnesota and questions surrounding her rapid increase in personal wealth.
Peter Flaherty, chairman of the National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC), told The Post that the organization is “certainly looking” into Omar’s financial disclosures.
Questions Over Explosive Wealth Growth
The development follows a recent report revealing that Omar’s husband’s venture capital firm quietly removed key officer information from public platforms as questions intensified over her sudden wealth gains.
According to Omar’s financial disclosures, her net worth surged to approximately $30 million within a year—a staggering 3,500% increase compared to 2023.
Much of this growth is attributed to businesses linked to her husband, Tim Mynett, including:
- A California-based winery
- Rose Lake Capital, a venture capital management firm headquartered in Washington, D.C.
Rose Lake Capital Under the Spotlight
Rose Lake Capital reportedly grew in value from nearly zero in 2023 to between $5 million and $25 million within just one year.
The firm had also claimed that its officers previously managed as much as $60 billion in assets. However, in a move that raised eyebrows, the names and biographies of the firm’s nine officers were recently removed from LinkedIn, prompting further questions about transparency.
Winery Value Also Spikes
Mynett’s winery business—previously linked to fraud allegations—also saw its estimated value rise sharply. Financial disclosures show its worth jumping to between $1 million and $5 million in 2024.
Shadow of Minnesota’s Feeding Our Future Scandal
Adding to the controversy is Minnesota’s Feeding Our Future fraud scandal, one of the largest pandemic-era aid fraud cases in the country, in which hundreds of millions of dollars were allegedly stolen from taxpayers.
Omar has previously commented on the scandal, attributing it to the rushed rollout of COVID-19 relief programs.
“A lot of the COVID programs were set up so quickly that a lot of the guardrails did not get created,” Omar told CNN earlier this month.
Calls for Broader Investigation
Conservative critics are now calling for a more comprehensive investigation into both Omar and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) over their handling of the scandal.
Rep. Brian Babin (R–Texas) wrote on X:
“On Walz’s watch, Minnesota became a fraud factory, aided and defended by allies like Ilhan Omar. Investigate everything. Prosecute everyone involved.”
As scrutiny intensifies, watchdog groups and lawmakers are pressing for greater transparency surrounding the congresswoman’s finances and the broader failures that allowed the fraud to occur.
