Popular relationship coach and Senior Pastor of David Christian Centre (DCC), Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo, has defended his Bible-inspired tattoo, describing it as a modern tool for evangelism that reached millions within 24 hours.
The pastor unveiled the tattoo in a video shared on his official Instagram page on Saturday to mark his 50th birthday. The tattoo, inked on his arm, features John 3:16 written in Roman numerals — “III: XVI”, a verse widely regarded as the cornerstone of the Christian gospel.
The video opens with a voice-over reciting the scripture, immediately drawing attention online and sparking widespread debate across social media platforms.
“The Gospel Was Preached to Millions”
Responding to the mixed reactions, Okonkwo addressed critics in a Facebook post on Sunday, stressing that the core message of the Gospel was being overlooked.
“My religious brothers and sisters were busy judging over tattoo; they didn’t notice that the gospel (John 3:16) was preached to millions in 24hrs by almost all blogs,” he wrote.
He added that a detailed explanation would follow, while inviting followers to his thanksgiving service.
“Anyway, we will share in details on Monday night. For now, please come to my praise party/thanksgiving service this Sunday @dcclagos on mainland & island. There will be food, fun, and praise.”
Mixed Reactions Online
As earlier reported by PUNCH Online, the tattoo generated intense reactions, with opinions sharply divided.
Some critics cited biblical passages opposing body markings. One user, @iamqneth, commented:
“The Bible says we should not make a mark on our skin… so all I can say is hmmmm!”
Another commenter, @sailorojay, questioned the example being set:
“Does this pastor not know it’s a sin to tattoo his skin? As a pastor, you should be leading members in the right path.”
Others offered more balanced views. @v_olarinde wrote:
“All things are lawful… but not all things edify. I respect you so much, sir, but this doesn’t edify.”
Praise and Support from Followers
Despite the criticism, many followers applauded the move, describing it as bold and creative. @nnekaekpe referenced scripture in support:
“Tatted!!!!! ‘And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.’”
Another follower, @sheunnatural, joked:
“Now I can get my tattoo. My mentor gbe mi debe,”
(loosely translated: “My mentor got me there.”)
Others simply expressed admiration, commenting: “I love it.”
Staying Calm Amid the Debate
Known for his youth-friendly approach to relationship, marriage, and faith teachings, Okonkwo continued sharing moments from his birthday celebration, captioning one post:
“Still celebrating the big Five 0.”
Addressing the ongoing debate, he urged followers to remain calm:
“Those who want to hear about tattoos, drink water and relax. We will talk on Monday after the parties this weekend.”
A Conversation on Creative Evangelism
By framing the tattoo as a conversation starter rather than a rebellion against faith, Pastor Okonkwo positioned the act as unconventional evangelism—turning controversy into an opportunity to spread the Gospel in a digital age.
