The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of 18 persons following a fatal multiple-vehicle road traffic crash that occurred on Tuesday along the Dutse–Kiyawa Highway, at Dan Masara Quarters in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide.
According to the statement, preliminary investigations revealed that excessive speeding and tyre burst led to a loss of control, resulting in what the corps described as an avoidable crash.
Vehicles Involved
The crash involved three vehicles:
- Two commercial Volkswagen Golf cars —
- White (Registration No: XA-500-KYW)
- Red (Registration No: RAN-836-XA)
- One orange Mercedes-Benz tipper truck (Registration No: BUU-289-XA)
Casualties
Mohammed said a total of 20 persons were involved in the accident, comprising:
- Eight adult males
- Eight adult females
- Two male children
- Two female children
Out of this number, 18 persons lost their lives, while two adult males sustained injuries, including bruises, fractures, internal injuries and head trauma.
Emergency Response
He explained that the FRSC emergency rescue team was immediately activated upon receiving a distress call at 12:17 pm, arriving at the scene within five minutes.
“The injured victims were promptly evacuated to Dutse General Hospital for medical attention,” the statement said.
FRSC Reaffirms Safety Commitment
The Corps Marshal emphasised that the FRSC’s statutory mandate includes crash prevention, traffic regulation enforcement, rescue coordination and prompt evacuation of victims.
He noted that the corps continues to work closely with medical facilities and other emergency agencies to save lives during road traffic emergencies nationwide.
Mohammed reiterated that speed violations, poor vehicle maintenance, and the use of worn-out or expired tyres remain major causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian roads.
He advised motorists to observe speed limits, maintain their vehicles properly, and exercise utmost caution at all times.
Investigation Ongoing
The FRSC boss confirmed that an immediate investigation into the crash has commenced, assuring the public of continuous engagement with relevant stakeholders to strengthen emergency response capacity, expand operational logistics, and improve road safety outcomes in line with global best practices.
Mohammed also commiserated with the families of the deceased and reaffirmed the corps’ resolve to make Nigerian roads safer.
He urged all road users to take personal responsibility for safety, stressing that “every crash prevented is a life saved.”
