Barcelona delivered a statement performance in the Spanish Super Cup, cruising past Athletic Club with a dominant 5–0 victory in the semi-final. Head coach Hansi Flick was visibly pleased after the final whistle, hailing his team’s mentality, defensive solidity and collective performance.
Speaking after the match, Flick highlighted his satisfaction while stressing that his focus quickly shifts to the next challenge.
“For me, as soon as the game ends, I’m already thinking about the next one, but I really appreciate what I saw today,” Flick said.
“We kept another clean sheet, and that’s very good because it gives us confidence in defence.
We showed a different mentality and attitude, and I really liked how we played as a team, both in attack and defence.”
Lamine Yamal Absence Explained
One of the biggest pre-match talking points was Lamine Yamal’s absence from the starting lineup. Given the teenager’s growing importance to Barcelona, questions quickly arose after the game.
Flick moved to reassure fans, explaining that the decision was purely precautionary.
“He’s been feeling a bit off the last few days and couldn’t train, which is why he didn’t start. But he’s fine,” the German coach confirmed.
Raphinha Shines on His Return
Another major highlight of the night was Raphinha, who produced an outstanding performance and scored twice.
Flick expressed his delight at seeing the Brazilian winger back at his best and making a decisive impact.
“I’m very happy for him. He always shows 100 percent mentality on the pitch, and I’m very happy to have him back,” Flick said.
Focus Turns to the Final
With Barcelona now safely through to the final, attention turned to the second semi-final featuring Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Asked if he had a preferred opponent, Flick remained diplomatic.
“The good thing is that we’re in the final. We’ll see what happens in the other semi-final,” he said.
The press conference also featured a lighter moment. Flick has previously joked about going to sleep instead of watching late-night Real Madrid games. When reminded that the other semi-final would kick off earlier, he was asked if he would be watching.
“I can’t confirm that,” Flick replied with a laugh.
Calm and Confident Approach
Once again, Flick refused to choose between Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid as a preferred opponent, underlining his composed mindset ahead of the final.
“That’s the good thing about being in the final. You can watch the game calmly and see what happens,” he concluded.
