FirstBank Nigeria has become one of the first financial institutions to comply with a new directive from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), allowing Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) across the country to accept international cards.
In a customer notification sent via email on Wednesday, the bank confirmed that all FirstBank ATMs nationwide have been successfully configured to support foreign-issued and globally accepted ATM cards.
The development follows a CBN circular dated Thursday, 18 December 2025, which instructed deposit money banks to enable the use of international cards on domestic ATMs. The directive aims to improve access to funds and enhance banking convenience for customers.
According to the circular, signed by the CBN Director of the Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Dr. Rita Sike, the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen convenience, security, and user experience in foreign card transactions—particularly for Nigerians in the diaspora and tourists visiting the country.
Confirming its compliance, FirstBank stated in its email to customers:
“We are pleased to inform you that FirstBank ATMs across Nigeria now accept international and globally issued ATM cards.”
The move is expected to significantly ease cash withdrawals for foreign cardholders and boost financial accessibility within Nigeria.
