The Federal Government is set to unveil a renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), aimed at ending recurring strikes in Nigeria’s public universities.
When and Where
According to Boriowo Folasade, Press Director at the Ministry of Education, the official unveiling will take place on January 14, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) headquarters in Abuja. The event will be presided over by Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, and Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, Minister of State for Education.
Goals of the Agreement
The renewed pact is designed to:
- Foster industrial harmony in public universities.
- Improve teaching and learning conditions.
- Promote sustainable development across Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
“The agreement underscores the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to constructive engagement, resolving industrial issues through sustained dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation,” the statement said.
It is also expected to enhance industrial peace, create a more conducive academic environment, and boost confidence among students, staff, and the wider public.
Who Will Attend
The ceremony will bring together:
- Senior government officials
- ASUU leadership
- Heads of tertiary institutions
- Development partners
Background
For years, Nigeria’s public universities have been plagued by frequent ASUU strikes, driven by disputes over funding, infrastructure, staff welfare, and lecturer payment platforms.
A similar agreement was signed in 2009 to address these challenges, but its implementation stalled due to financial constraints and disagreements over university autonomy. Over time, the original pact became obsolete due to inflation and the emergence of new disputes.
The new agreement, concluded after intensive negotiations in 2025, effectively ends a 16-year stalemate, providing a framework for stable service conditions for public university lecturers.
