The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a credible, transparent and internationally acceptable national census, stressing that accuracy and due process will not be compromised for speed.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance on Tuesday while receiving the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf, and members of the commission’s management team during a courtesy visit to his office.
Idris emphasised that reliable population data is fundamental to national development, noting that effective planning and policy-making are impossible without accurate demographic figures.
“I want to reaffirm the commitment of the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, to delivering a credible, transparent and internationally acceptable national census, anchored on effective public communication and strong inter-agency collaboration,” he said.
The minister assured the NPC of his ministry’s readiness to mobilise Nigerians nationwide once the President proclaims a census date.
“My ministry and its agencies stand fully prepared to drive nationwide advocacy and sensitisation whenever the President announces the census,” Idris added.
He disclosed that key government media and communication agencies — including the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Voice of Nigeria (VON) and the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) — would be deployed to ensure widespread public awareness.
Idris also noted that a presidential proclamation remains the legal foundation for conducting a national census, assuring that all preparations are being aligned with global best practices. He urged the NPC to sustain public enlightenment efforts through government-owned media platforms.
Earlier, Dr Yusuf commended the Ministry of Information and National Orientation for its continued support in public mobilisation ahead of the postponed census.
He stated that the commission remains operationally ready, revealing that systems, logistics, ICT infrastructure and personnel are being consistently upgraded to guarantee efficiency, transparency and credibility once a new date is announced.
Yusuf further appealed for sustained access to government media platforms to deepen public understanding of census participation and civil registration, describing public trust as essential to effective population management in Nigeria.
