The Federal Government has confirmed that debris from precision-guided munitions used in recent airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist camps fell in parts of Sokoto and Kwara states.
According to the government, the debris landed in Jabo, Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, and Offa, Kwara State, near the premises of a hotel. Authorities have assured the public that no civilian casualties were recorded in either location.
Precision Airstrikes on Terrorist Enclaves
In a statement issued on Friday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed that the strikes targeted two major ISIS enclaves in the Bauni forest axis of Tangaza Local Government Area, Sokoto State.
He explained that the operation followed extensive intelligence gathering and confirmed that the camps were being used by foreign ISIS fighters infiltrating Nigeria from the Sahel region, working in coordination with local terrorist affiliates.
The strikes, carried out in the early hours of Friday, were executed with the explicit approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the minister said.
Use of Advanced Military Technology
Idris revealed that a total of 16 GPS-guided precision-guided munitions (PGMs)—commonly known as smart bombs—were deployed during the operation. The munitions were delivered using MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial platforms, launched from maritime platforms in the Gulf of Guinea.
“The precision strikes successfully neutralised targeted ISIS elements attempting to penetrate Nigeria from the Sahel corridor,” the minister stated.
He emphasised that PGMs are designed to hit targets with high accuracy while minimising collateral damage.
No Civilian Casualties Recorded
While acknowledging that debris from the expended munitions fell outside the immediate target areas, Idris stressed that no harm was recorded.
“No civilian casualties were recorded in either location, and relevant authorities promptly secured the affected areas,” he said.
Residents in parts of Sokoto and Kwara had earlier reported hearing explosions around the same time the airstrikes were carried out.
FG Reaffirms Commitment to National Security
The Federal Government reiterated its firm commitment to tackling terrorism and safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
“Nigeria remains fully aligned with its strategic partners and friends in executing coordinated actions aimed at ensuring lasting peace, border security, and regional stability,” Idris said.
The government reaffirmed its resolve to confront, degrade, and eliminate transnational extremist threats seeking to undermine the country’s security.
