FCT Minister dismisses allegations, says Bala Mohammed is blaming others for his political woes
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has strongly rebuffed claims by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, accusing the governor of attempting to deflect responsibility for the political challenges in his state.
Governor Mohammed, speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, alleged that Wike was behind the crises confronting his administration. He claimed that the FCT minister had previously vowed to “put fire” in Bauchi State and was now deploying federal institutions and political influence to destabilise his government.
The Bauchi governor also criticised Wike’s leadership style in Abuja, questioning his spending pattern and portraying him as a central figure in the internal conflicts rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Wike: ‘Stop Shifting Blame’
Responding during a “thank you” visit to Abua-Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State, Wike dismissed the accusations as baseless and politically motivated.
“I watched what the Bauchi governor is saying — that all the problems he’s having are because of me, because I said I would put fire in his state. If I have such power, why are you fighting? If I truly have the power to put fire, why are you struggling?” he asked.
The former Rivers State governor insisted that the issues confronting Bala Mohammed were self-inflicted, arising from internal party disputes in Bauchi State.
“Go and face your problems. You came to my state and I warned you — ‘be careful, leave my state alone.’ You wanted to impose a party leader in my state. Today, that same person does not even have a party to present a successor,” Wike said.
PDP Crisis and EFCC Allegations
Wike further recalled warning PDP leaders against overreaching in states where they lacked control, noting that the present turmoil in Bauchi was the result of ignoring such counsel.
He also rejected claims that he was responsible for alleged Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigations involving some of Bala’s associates.
“Now EFCC is chasing them, and he says it’s me. What is my business? If your state is clean, go there and enjoy yourself,” he stated, adding that law enforcement matters should not be politicised.
According to Wike, his disagreements with the Bauchi governor were strictly party-related and had nothing to do with governance or personal finances.
“I am only fighting with you on party leadership issues. I am not interested in what you spend. Nigerians should be told to leave me alone and face their problems,” he said.
‘Account for Your Own Record’
The FCT minister also challenged Bala Mohammed to give an account of his tenure as FCT minister between 2010 and 2015, instead of criticising the current administration.
“You said I’m spending badly. You were FCT minister from 2010 to 2015. Why not tell Nigerians what you did? The land was sold, contracts were awarded, money was collected upfront, and today I’m the one completing the projects,” Wike argued.
He maintained that Nigerians were already assessing his performance in office and expressed confidence in his record.
“Nigerians are singing our names every day because we have done well — and we will continue to do well,” he declared.
A Final Jab
Wike concluded with a sarcastic remark, suggesting he was unfairly blamed for every political crisis nationwide.
“Anybody who has a stroke — it’s Wike. Anybody who has a headache — Wike. They’re in Sokoto — Wike. In Taraba — Wike. In Lagos — Wike. In Bauchi — Wike. That means this Wike is very strong,” he said.
