Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately enforce the Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments, warning that continued delays are hurting grassroots communities across the country.
Atiku made the appeal in a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, noting that nearly two years after the judgment, the Federal Government is yet to fully implement the court’s directive.
According to him, Supreme Court judgments are final and must be obeyed without delay.
“Supreme Court judgments are final, not optional. Persistently refusing to enforce one is a direct breach of the Constitution and a violation of the oath you swore to Nigerians,” Atiku stated.
The former vice president emphasized that denying local governments financial autonomy weakens governance at the grassroots level and stalls development.
“Local governments are the closest arm of government to the people. By withholding their financial autonomy, you are not weakening governors—you are crippling communities, stalling development, and deepening poverty at the grassroots,” he added.
Atiku urged the Tinubu administration to respect the rule of law and take urgent steps to implement the ruling in order to strengthen local governance and improve service delivery nationwide.
