A prominent faith leader and civil society advocate, Reverend Blessed Amalambu, has called on the Federal Government to postpone the rollout of Nigeria’s new tax reforms, emphasizing the need for wider public engagement and institutional consensus.
Speaking in Umuahia, Abia State, on Monday, Amalambu said his intervention stems from civic responsibility and concern for policies that directly impact citizens’ livelihoods.
Amalambu serves as the Public Relations Officer of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria in Abia State and as State Coordinator of the National Anti-Corruption Volunteer Corps under the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Tax Reforms Spark Public Debate
The 2025 tax reform laws were designed to modernize tax administration, improve efficiency, and boost government revenue. However, the reforms have generated debate following differing interpretations between the executive branch and members of the National Assembly over procedural and implementation issues.
“Some lawmakers have expressed reservations about the process leading to the laws’ publication, while government officials maintain that due process was followed,” Amalambu said. “This divergence, even when procedural, can create uncertainty among citizens who have not had access to the legislative documents.”
Harmonizing Governance and Public Confidence
Amalambu stressed that democratic governance requires harmony between the executive and the legislature, especially on sensitive matters like taxation. He added that public confidence would be strengthened if all outstanding concerns were openly addressed and communicated before implementation.
Timing and Economic Considerations
Beyond procedure, Amalambu questioned the timing of the reforms, citing prevailing economic hardship, insecurity, and rising living costs. He argued that policy success depends not only on well-designed laws but also on public understanding and favorable social conditions at the time of implementation.
Call for Public Awareness and Stakeholder Engagement
The cleric emphasized that properly structured tax reforms could support economic growth and reduce inequality, especially if safeguards for low-income earners and small businesses are clearly defined. However, he warned that weak public awareness and administrative lapses could undermine their intended benefits.
He urged the government to prioritize:
- Extensive public enlightenment campaigns
- Stakeholder consultations
- Inter-institutional alignment
According to Amalambu, a measured, inclusive approach would allow Nigerians to understand the reforms and participate constructively.
