Several homes razed, soldiers missing as fear grips Wase communities
Suspected bandits have killed at least five residents and one soldier during a deadly attack on Zurak community in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack, which occurred at about 3:00 pm on Monday, triggered a fierce gun battle between the assailants and security forces. According to local sources, three soldiers are still missing following the confrontation.
Before striking Zurak, the bandits reportedly invaded Sabon Gari community, where they set several houses ablaze, looted shops, and carted away food items and other valuables.
Confirming the incident, a youth leader in Wase, Shapi’i Sambo, said the body of the fallen soldier has been evacuated to Jos. He described the situation as tense, noting that residents are living in fear amid rising insecurity.
A resident of Zak community, Jibrin Isa, described the aftermath of the attack as devastating. He said Zurak community has been largely deserted, with residents fleeing to nearby villages to escape further violence.
The latest attack highlights the growing insecurity in Wase LGA, which has witnessed a surge in banditry and kidnapping in recent months. On December 21, 2025, no fewer than 28 travellers were abducted along major routes in the area.
Community leaders are now calling on the federal and state governments to urgently deploy more security personnel and take decisive action to restore peace and protect lives and property in the affected communities.
