No fewer than 700 residents of Surulere Local Government Area in Lagos State have benefited from a free medical outreach organised by the Akpabio Cares Initiative, a humanitarian programme supported by the office of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The outreach, held on Saturday, offered free medical consultations, essential drugs, and eyeglasses to vulnerable members of the community, easing access to basic healthcare services.
A statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by Akpabio’s media team said the programme was the third edition of the initiative in two years, following similar medical interventions in Osogbo, Osun State, and Yankaba, Kano State.
Giving Back Through Healthcare
Speaking at the event, the convener of the programme and Senior Legislative Aide to the President of the Senate, Ahmed Mustapha, said the outreach was part of a broader effort to give back to society through impactful humanitarian services.
“We are doing this as a way to give back to society, and we believe that the best gift anyone can receive is good health,” Mustapha said.
He explained that the Lagos outreach was designed to reach about 700 beneficiaries, providing them with free consultations, medications, and eyeglasses.
National Impact Beyond State Lines
Addressing questions on why the programme was held in Lagos rather than Akpabio’s home state of Akwa Ibom, Mustapha noted that the Senate President occupies a national office.
“Senator Godswill Akpabio is the Senate President for the whole of Nigeria, and his impact must be felt across the country,” he said.
Beneficiaries Express Gratitude
Several beneficiaries praised the initiative, describing it as timely and life-changing.
“We are especially grateful to Senator Akpabio for remembering our community and reaching out to us. We pray that God continues to strengthen him,” one beneficiary said.
Another resident commended Mustapha’s role in facilitating the outreach, noting his deep ties to the community.
“We appreciate the Senate President for appointing Mustapha, who grew up here and has brought real dividends of democracy to us,” the beneficiary added.
Mustapha assured participants that the Akpabio Cares Initiative would continue nationwide, revealing that the next medical outreach is scheduled for the North Central geopolitical zone.
