🔍 Talking Points
A surprising Nigeria XI
Nigeria’s team selection has raised eyebrows. Only Calvin Bassey, Bruno Onyemaechi and Victor Osimhen retain their places from the side that started against Tunisia.
Captain Wilfred Ndidi, defender Semi Ajayi, and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali have all been rested due to suspension concerns — each is one yellow card away from missing the round-of-16.
What’s more puzzling is the inclusion of Victor Osimhen, who is also walking the suspension tightrope. Head coach Éric Chelle will be hoping the Galatasaray striker avoids another booking that would rule him out of Nigeria’s knockout clash.
Debut watch
One of the standout selections is Ryan Alebiosu, the former Arsenal academy defender who joined Blackburn Rovers from Belgian side Kortrijk in the summer. He makes his Nigeria senior debut this afternoon.
🏆 Match Context
Nigeria have already sealed qualification for the round of 16 after victories over Tunisia and Tanzania, and are chasing a rare perfect group-stage record — something they have achieved only once in AFCON history.
Uganda, meanwhile, sit bottom of Group D with one point, but a win today could still see them progress as one of the best third-placed teams. Interestingly, the Cranes have historically troubled the Super Eagles, boasting four wins and two draws from eight previous meetings.
Selection dilemma for Chelle
Éric Chelle faces a balancing act: rotate to protect key players or maintain momentum. Nigeria’s thrilling 3–2 win over Tunisia, which saw two late goals conceded, hinted at moments of complacency — something the coach will be keen to avoid in their final group outing.
