No fewer than 30 people are feared dead following a deadly attack by suspected bandits on a village market in Niger State.
The armed assailants, believed to be operating from the Kainji Lake National Park, reportedly stormed Kasuwan Daji Market in Demo village, located in Kabe District of Borgu Local Government Area, on Saturday. The attackers set the market ablaze, shot indiscriminately at villagers, and abducted many residents.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the bandits gained access to the community through Kabe, looted food items and other goods from the market, and fled with their captives through routes leading into the vast Kainji Lake forest.
According to Leadership, the scale of the attack left the market completely destroyed, with shops and stalls razed by fire.
As of the time of filing this report, PUNCH Online has not independently verified the exact casualty figure or the full number of abducted persons.
Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Command said a joint security team had visited the affected area. The Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, stated that rescue operations were already underway.
“Over 30 victims lost their lives during the attack, and some persons were also kidnapped,” Abiodun told AFP, confirming that the incident occurred on Saturday.
Security agencies have intensified efforts to track the attackers and rescue the abducted victims.
