Troops of the Nigerian Army under the 63 Brigade/Sector 1, Joint Task Force, South-South, Operation Delta Safe, have dismantled a criminal gang operating in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, recovering a cache of arms and ammunition.

The operation, carried out around Ibusa, led to the arrest of several suspects and the seizure of multiple pump-action rifles.

Arrests and Recovery of Weapons

According to a statement signed by Captain Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 63 Brigade, the initial operation was launched following credible intelligence on the activities of a notorious cult-linked criminal gang in the area.

The raid resulted in the arrest of two suspected gang members and the recovery of two pump-action rifles from them. In addition, three other pump-action rifles were retrieved from individuals identified as local vigilantes.

Follow-Up Operations Yield More Arrests

Captain Bawa-Rijau disclosed that follow-up operations were conducted to further flush out criminal elements. During these operations, troops combed surrounding areas, leading to the recovery of eight additional pump-action rifles at Umuisiagba.

A total of 13 suspects were arrested in the follow-up raids. They include:

  • Nwaokonta Elvis
  • Obi Victor Woke
  • Uba Elijah
  • Nonso Ibiora
  • Dumbili Ezefili
  • Ndefu Ifeanyi
  • Ozemene Richard
  • Broderick Patrick
  • Nwaokonta Afamefile
  • Kelvin Ejiani
  • Victor Ogochukwu
  • Ogadi Kelvin Ikechukwu
  • Ndibuisi Obiogonna (a native doctor)

All suspects, along with the recovered weapons, have been handed over to the appropriate security agencies for further investigation and prosecution.

Army Reaffirms Commitment to Security

Commending the troops for their vigilance and professionalism, the Commander of 63 Brigade, Brigadier General Morounfolu Shonibare, charged them to sustain the momentum and clamp down on all criminal networks within the brigade’s area of responsibility.

He reassured residents of Delta State and neighbouring areas of the Army’s continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
