The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) Plc has issued a public warning to customers over fraudulent text messages circulating across mobile networks, falsely claiming to offer electricity bill refunds.
In a statement released on Wednesday, IBEDC said the scam messages impersonate the company and are designed to trick unsuspecting customers into clicking malicious links that could compromise their personal and financial information.
How the Scam Works
According to the company, the fraudulent messages often appear with the sender ID “FROM: IBEDC”, making them look authentic. The SMS typically claims that customers’ electricity bills have been recalculated and that a refund is available.
IBEDC clarified that it is not conducting any refund exercise and has no connection to the website being promoted in the messages.
“The attention of IBEDC has been drawn to SMS messages claiming that customers’ utility bills have been recalculated and that a refund is available. We categorically state that IBEDC is not conducting any refund exercise through that website or any similar third-party link,” the management said.
Phishing Website Identified
The company specifically identified www.infodhe.online as a phishing website used by fraudsters to deceive customers.
“The SMS in circulation did not originate from IBEDC, does not represent our processes, and is not linked to any of our approved platforms or channels,” the statement added.
Safety Advisory to Customers
IBEDC urged customers across its franchise areas to remain vigilant and take the following precautions:
- Ignore and delete any SMS claiming electricity bill refunds
- Do not click on suspicious links
- Never disclose banking details, card information, BVN, OTPs, passwords, or other personal data
- Be cautious of calls or messages from unknown persons claiming to represent IBEDC
“Individuals should not disclose their banking details, card information, BVN, OTP, passwords, or any personal data to these websites or to unknown callers claiming to be from the utility provider,” the company warned.
Use Only Official Channels
The distribution company emphasised that all legitimate services — including electricity purchases, account enquiries, and authorised refunds — are carried out strictly through official channels such as:
- iRecharge
- Accredited payment agents
- IBEDC business offices
Customers were also encouraged to promptly report any suspicious SMS, calls, or websites using the company’s name to IBEDC’s customer care channels.
Disclaimer on Liability
IBEDC concluded with a firm disclaimer, stating that it will not be held responsible for losses arising from interactions with fraudulent platforms.
“IBEDC will not be liable for any losses or damages resulting from transactions or engagements conducted through unauthorised, third-party, or fraudulent platforms falsely claiming to represent the company.”
Customers seeking clarification or verification are advised to contact IBEDC through its official customer care lines or verified social media platforms.
