Gunmen on Tuesday evening abducted a former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Moruf Musa, at Ibiade in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of the state.
Musa, who served as Majority Leader of the Assembly between 2007 and 2011, was reportedly seized at about 7:00 pm while observing Muslim prayers inside a mosque located within his residential compound.
Local Government Chairman Confirms Incident
Confirming the abduction on Wednesday, the Chairman of Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, Mr Ganiyu Odunoiki, said the incident occurred during the evening prayer session. He added that the attackers fired gunshots along the road as they fled the area.
“The report is true. The former lawmaker was abducted on Tuesday evening. The gunmen also reportedly shot sporadically along the road while escaping,” Odunoiki said.
He disclosed that security efforts were already underway, with local authorities working alongside police officers to locate the victim.
“We are currently combing the surrounding bushes together with police officers. We are also expecting the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, which is already on its way. The Area Commander from Ogbere is also present,” he added.
Police Activate Anti-Kidnapping Measures
The Ogun State Police Command also confirmed the abduction, assuring the public that steps had been taken to secure Musa’s release.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the command had deployed specialised units to handle the situation.
“The Ogun State Police Command is aware of the reported abduction of Hon. Moruf Musa in Ibiade, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area. Security measures have been activated, including the deployment of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit. Members of the public are advised to remain calm pending official updates,” Babaseyi said.
Eyewitness Account
A resident of the community disclosed that Musa reportedly struggled with his abductors for over 20 minutes, attracting the attention of nearby residents.
According to the source, the gunmen fired sporadically into the air to disperse onlookers before eventually escaping with the former lawmaker.
