There are growing fears that many people have been killed after a suicide bomber detonated an explosive inside a mosque in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
Reports indicate that hundreds of worshippers lost their lives when the attacker blew himself up at the Gambarou Juma’at Mosque in Maiduguri.
According to the punch, survivors of the attack said the assailant entered the mosque unnoticed and detonated the bomb during Maghrib prayers while worshippers were in congregation.
“The suicide bomber set off the explosive during the first raka’at of Maghrib prayers. Many people were killed, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” a survivor was quoted as saying.
As of the time of filing this report, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, suspicion has fallen on the Boko Haram insurgent group, which has carried out several suicide bombings in the region in recent months.
