Denmark Summons U.S. Ambassador After Trump Appoints Envoy to Greenland
Move reignites tensions over Arctic island as Copenhagen warns Washington to respect Denmark’s territorial integrity.
Denmark has summoned the United States ambassador following President Donald Trump’s appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the U.S. Special Envoy to Greenland—a decision that has revived long-standing tensions over the strategically vital Arctic territory.
In a statement released on December 22, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said the appointment signals that the White House’s interest in Greenland “has not gone away.” He stressed that Denmark, a NATO ally of the United States, has repeatedly made clear that Greenland is not for sale.
“We insist that everyone, including the U.S., must show respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark,” Rasmussen said.
Trump defended the decision in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, praising Landry’s understanding of Greenland’s strategic importance. “Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s interests for the safety, security, and survival of our allies—and indeed, the world,” Trump wrote.
Greenland, the world’s largest island, is an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty with its own local government. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, reiterated that the island alone will decide its future.
Relations between Copenhagen and Washington have cooled amid Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland. Earlier this month, Denmark’s intelligence services took the unprecedented step of describing the United States as a potential national security threat, citing concerns about possible economic or military pressure—even against allies.
Governor Landry, who has led Louisiana since January 2024 and whose term runs until 2028, described the appointment as an honor. “It’s an honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland part of the U.S.,” he wrote in a post on X, while insisting the role would not affect his duties as governor.
A former police officer and Louisiana attorney general, Landry now takes on a role tied to one of the world’s most geopolitically sensitive regions. Greenland is roughly three times the size of Texas, home to about 57,000 people, and rich in natural resources. Its economy relies heavily on fishing and subsidies from Denmark.
Strategically, Greenland sits along the shortest route between Europe and North America, making it a critical location for U.S. ballistic missile defense and broader Arctic security.
Trump has also named Thomas Dans as head of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission. Dans, an investor and Arctic policy expert with close ties to the MAGA movement, previously helped arrange a high-profile visit to Greenland by Donald Trump Jr., Vice President JD Vance, and Vance’s wife, Usha.
