Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump is preparing to intensify his immigration enforcement in 2026, backed by billions in new funding and plans for expanded workplace raids — even as political opposition mounts ahead of next year’s midterm elections.

Trump has already deployed additional immigration agents to major U.S. cities, conducting sweeps in neighborhoods that have sometimes led to clashes with residents. While federal agents carried out some high-profile business raids this year, they largely avoided farms, factories, and other key economic sectors known for employing undocumented immigrants.

Under the new plan, ICE and Border Patrol will receive $170 billion in additional funding through September 2029 — a dramatic increase from their current annual budgets of around $19 billion — following a massive spending package passed by the Republican-controlled Congress in July.

Administration officials say this funding will be used to hire thousands more agents, open new detention centers, expand immigrant pickups from local jails, and partner with outside companies to track undocumented individuals. These plans come amid rising political pushback as Americans express concern over aggressive enforcement tactics.

Local Pushback and Political Implications

Miami, one of the cities most affected by the crackdown due to its large immigrant population, recently elected its first Democratic mayor in nearly 30 years. The mayor-elect cited Trump’s policies as a contributing factor. Similar trends are emerging in other local elections, highlighting growing voter unease with militarized immigration operations.

“People are beginning to see this not as an immigration question anymore, but as a violation of rights and due process, militarizing neighborhoods extraconstitutionally,” said Mike Madrid, a moderate Republican strategist. “This is clearly a challenge for the president and Republicans.”

Trump’s approval rating on immigration has also fallen, from 50% in March to 41% in mid-December, driven in part by concerns over masked federal agents deploying aggressive tactics, including tear gas in residential areas and detaining U.S. citizens.

Expanded Deportation Efforts

Beyond ramping up enforcement, the Trump administration has revoked temporary legal status for hundreds of thousands of Haitian, Venezuelan, and Afghan immigrants, increasing the number of people eligible for deportation. The president has vowed to remove 1 million immigrants per year, though current data suggests this target is unlikely to be met — 622,000 immigrants have been deported since January.

The expanded crackdown signals a continued focus on immigration as a cornerstone of Trump’s policy agenda, even as public sentiment shows growing concern over the human and political costs of these measures.
