Hugo Ekitike hailed goal-scoring as “the best feeling as a striker” after continuing his fine form in Liverpool’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
The French forward found the net for a third consecutive league match, rising highest to nod home a clever header that doubled Liverpool’s advantage at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening.
Ekitike’s strike capped another impressive outing and underlined his growing influence since joining the Reds from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer. He has now scored five goals in his last three Premier League appearances and 11 in all competitions for Liverpool this season.
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Ekitike said:
“It’s the best feeling as a striker. You need goals. The most important thing is the win and playing with confidence, and if I can help the team with goals, that’s even better.
“On the first goal, I helped with the pass before the assist. I always try to help the team in every way I can, and that’s what matters most.”
Match Summary
The match in north London proved eventful from start to finish. Tottenham were reduced to 10 men in the first half after Xavi Simons was shown a red card, handing Liverpool a numerical advantage.
Soon after the restart, Alexander Isak broke the deadlock with a composed finish, before Ekitike doubled the lead with his well-taken header. Spurs responded late on, with Richarlison pulling one back inside the final 10 minutes, but Liverpool held firm to secure all three points. Tottenham captain Cristian Romero was later sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card.
Reflecting on the contest, Ekitike added:
“It wasn’t our best game, but it was a difficult one and we controlled it well. The end of the second half was hard because they pushed and scored, but we stayed strong and got the win, which is the most important thing.
“Playing against 10 men is never easy, especially at home. The fans give them energy, so you have to be smart and fight for every ball.”
Liverpool now return to Anfield buoyed by another important away win and the continued goal-scoring form of their in-demand forward.
