The United States government has suspended the processing of green card and citizenship applications filed by Nigerians and nationals of several other countries newly added to an expanded US travel ban.
According to a report by CBS News on Thursday, a US government official disclosed that the Trump administration has directed the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to halt affected applications due to national security concerns and an ongoing review of immigration screening and vetting procedures.
Expanded Travel Restrictions
The development follows a proclamation signed by President Donald Trump on Tuesday, further tightening entry into the United States for nationals of countries classified as high-risk.
The proclamation cited what it described as “demonstrated, persistent, and severe deficiencies in screening, vetting, and information-sharing” that allegedly pose threats to US national security and public safety.
Nigeria is among 15 additional countries newly subjected to partial travel restrictions under the policy.
President Trump had earlier, on October 31, designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” referencing allegations of widespread violence against Christians in the country.
