Dangote’s refinery continues to operate despite facing regulatory, supply, and labor challenges since its inception.
The journey began during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, with plans to acquire the Port Harcourt refinery, which were later canceled under the administration of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. Subsequently, Dangote built a new refinery from scratch, investing approximately $20 billion.
At various points, regulatory concerns were raised about product quality, which were later resolved. Limited crude supply from NNPC initially forced the refinery to import crude from abroad. In 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed that Dangote Refinery be supplied with crude for local payment, supporting domestic refining.
Labor disputes with unions such as NUPENG and PENGASSAN also posed challenges, prompting intervention by the National Assembly to mediate.
Today, the Dangote Refinery produces petrol (PMS), diesel, jet fuel, and other petroleum products, while exporting to international markets. The refinery contributes to foreign exchange earnings and reduces Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuel.
