Alleged Coup Plot Uncovered: Investigators Reveal Coordinated, Well-Funded Network

Security agencies have uncovered an alleged coup plot scheduled for October 25, 2025, which investigators say was designed to be deadly and far-reaching.

According to intelligence findings, the plot targeted the President, Vice President Kashim Shettima, ministers, service chiefs, and other senior government officials for elimination, in what authorities describe as a deliberate attempt to overthrow constituted authority.

Coordinated Plot Across Armed Forces

Investigators said the conspiracy involved serving officers across the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force, forming a clandestine, cross-service network with the capacity to undermine national stability and seize power.

The security establishment described the plot as “coordinated and well-funded,” noting that its cross-service nature significantly heightened the threat level.

Financial Inducements and Encrypted Communications

Intelligence reports revealed that financial inducements ranging between ₦2 million and ₦5 million were allegedly paid to key participants to facilitate mobilisation and logistics.

Investigators also traced additional funds reportedly disbursed by a Colonel to several officers for “logistics and possible mobilisation,” with at least one major financier now under investigation.

A detailed financial trail is currently being analysed in collaboration with the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).

Encrypted communication platforms, including WhatsApp and Zangi, were allegedly used to coordinate activities, while discreet vehicle repairs and suspicious fund movements were identified as early-stage logistical preparations.

Key Suspect Turns Witness

One of the suspects, Lt. Col. Bappah, has emerged as a critical witness in the investigation.

According to the report, Bappah is “cooperating fully” with investigators, having admitted his role and provided detailed information on funding flows, recruitment strategies, and communication channels.

Security sources said his testimony has significantly strengthened the case and offered rare insight into the group’s modus operandi.

Elevated Threat and Preventive Action

An interim security assessment warned that the threat was exacerbated by the involvement of senior officers, some up to the rank of Brigadier-General, and the identification of strategic installations allegedly marked for seizure — indicators investigators say are consistent with classic coup-style planning.

While investigations remain ongoing and additional suspects are being tracked, security sources said the findings justified immediate preventive action to dismantle the network, secure sensitive facilities, and disrupt funding channels.

“The threat posed was clear and immediate,” the report concluded, warning that failure to act could have had “grave implications for national stability.”

Probe Expands to Civilian and Political Links

Security agencies are also examining possible political linkages connected to the alleged plot. Intelligence reviews reportedly identified the name of a former minister, though no formal charges have been filed and no arrest warrant issued, as the individual is believed to have been outside the country for some time.

Sources confirmed that the investigation has expanded beyond serving military personnel to include civilian contacts, financiers, and political associates who may have had direct or indirect dealings with key suspects.

“The investigation is not limited to uniforms alone,” a security source said.
“We are examining communication trails, financial flows, and political interfaces. That does not imply guilt — it is simply due diligence.”
