Newlywed Wife Arrested for Allegedly Poisoning Husband in Jigawa

Dutse, Jigawa State — The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newlywed woman for allegedly poisoning her husband with rat poison, leading to his death in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of the state.

The incident reportedly occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m., when the deceased consumed a meal prepared by his wife at their residence. Shortly after eating, he fell seriously ill and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

Confirming the development in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Shi’isu Adam, said detectives from the Jahun Division immediately launched an investigation into the matter.

According to the police spokesperson, the wife of the deceased was arrested as the prime suspect and, during interrogation, confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison.

“The suspect admitted that she deliberately laced her husband’s meal with rat poison,” SP Adam stated, adding that she also revealed she had sent her cousin to purchase the poison used in the act.

The suspect reportedly told investigators that she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she claimed pushed her into committing the alleged crime.

SP Adam further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a comprehensive investigation.

He assured that upon completion of the investigation, the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution.

Meanwhile, the police command appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, urging them to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving family and marital disputes.

The command warned against taking the law into one’s hands, noting that such actions often result in tragic and irreversible consequences.

Reaffirming its commitment to justice, the police assured residents of Jigawa State that the case would be thoroughly handled.

“The suspect is currently in police custody, and the command will ensure that justice is served,” the PPRO added.
