The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has dismissed allegations that local government chairmen are coercing civil servants to register or revalidate their membership with the party as a precondition for receiving their salaries.

The party described the claims as false, misleading and politically motivated.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday during the revalidation of the party’s immediate past state chairman, Chief Ugochukwu Agballah, at Udi/Agbudu Ward in Udi Local Government Area, the Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee in the state, Dr Ben Nwoye, categorically denied the allegation.

According to Nwoye, the ongoing APC membership registration and revalidation exercise across Enugu State is entirely voluntary and has recorded massive participation beyond expectations.

“Look at what is happening here today. Do you see anyone being forced? Nobody here is under pressure. People are participating freely,” he said.

He blamed the report on opposition elements, insisting that no government worker in the state has been compelled to join the APC.

“The opposition will always come up with propaganda. When you don’t have progressive ideas, the easiest thing is to spread false stories. No government worker is being forced to register with the APC,” Nwoye added.

The APC chairman further disclosed that data from the party’s electronic registration dashboard shows Enugu State currently leading the South-East zone in the ongoing exercise, with Udi Local Government Area ranking first among the state’s 17 LGAs.

He attributed the development to internal unity within the party and increasing public support for the administration of Governor Peter Mbah.

Nwoye noted that while some registration figures were yet to be uploaded due to network challenges in rural communities, available data already placed Enugu at the top of the South-East region.

Earlier, during his revalidation, Chief Agballah urged party members to remain loyal to the APC and its leadership, stressing that discipline, inclusiveness and grassroots mobilisation were essential for electoral success.

He described mass registration as critical to winning future elections.

“The registration is critical to our victory. If we have two million registered members, that means two million votes,” Agballah said, calling on party supporters and sympathisers to intensify mobilisation at the ward level.

Agballah reaffirmed his support for the current APC leadership in Enugu State and commended Governor Peter Mbah for what he described as inclusive leadership and effective conflict resolution within the party.

The revalidation event attracted several party stakeholders, including state legislators, local government officials and party leaders, highlighting what APC officials described as renewed unity and growing momentum ahead of future elections.

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that the APC has intensified its electronic membership registration exercise in Benue, Ekiti and Enugu states as part of efforts to strengthen its grassroots structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
