The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed an abduction incident in Kurmin Wali, a remote community in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, ending earlier uncertainty surrounding conflicting reports about the attack.

In a statement issued on Tuesday night via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Force said it received credible reports of the abduction, which sparked concern among residents and members of the public.

According to the Force spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, the incident prompted Kaduna State Governor to convene an emergency meeting of the State Security Council at the Government House in Kaduna.

Conflicting Accounts Caused Initial Confusion

Hundeyin explained that confusion arose during the meeting when some individuals from the affected local government area disputed the police report, describing it as inaccurate. This led security agencies to exercise caution and carry out further verification before making definitive public statements.

He clarified that comments earlier made by the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police during a media interaction were aimed at preventing unnecessary panic while facts were still being confirmed, and not to deny the incident.

“The remarks, which have since been widely misinterpreted, were a measured response pending confirmation of details from the field, including the identities and number of those affected,” the statement said.

Police Confirm Incident, Launch Rescue Operations

Following further verification by operational units and intelligence sources, the police confirmed that the abduction did take place.

Hundeyin said coordinated security operations were immediately activated in collaboration with other security agencies, with a focus on rescuing the victims and restoring calm to the area.

“The Nigeria Police Force has activated coordinated security operations, working closely with sister agencies, with a clear focus on locating and safely rescuing the victims, as well as restoring peace in the affected communities,” he said.

IGP Orders Full Deployment of Tactical Assets

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, has ordered the full deployment of critical operational and intelligence assets to Kajuru and surrounding communities.

These efforts include the deployment of tactical units, intensified patrols, targeted search-and-rescue operations, and proactive measures to protect lives and property.

Appeal for Calm and Responsible Reporting

The police appealed to the public and the media to exercise patience and rely only on official communications for verified information.

“The public is urged to avoid speculation or sensational reporting that could jeopardise ongoing operations or heighten public anxiety. The Force remains fully committed to the safety of all citizens and will continue to provide updates as developments unfold,” Hundeyin said.

Background: Disputed Abduction Claims

The confirmation follows claims by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kajuru Local Government Area that bandits abducted about 172 worshippers during a church service on Sunday.

However, the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu, initially dismissed the report, describing it as false and allegedly spread by “conflict entrepreneurs” seeking to create unrest.

Similarly, the Kaduna State Government also refuted reports of a mass abduction, insisting that no such incident occurred at the scale initially reported.
