Abiyamo Scheme expands access to free maternal and child healthcare across the state
No fewer than 54,000 pregnant women and children under the age of five have benefited from the Abiyamo Scheme, a flagship programme under the Ondo State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme, the state government has said.
The Special Adviser on Health to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Prof. Simidele Odimayo, disclosed this on Tuesday in Akure during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). He explained that the initiative provides free healthcare services to expectant mothers and young children across the state.
According to Odimayo, the Abiyamo Scheme is an improved version of the former Abiye programme, designed to broaden coverage and ensure sustainability.
“With this system, all pregnant women and children below five years are able to enjoy free health services. The government registers beneficiaries into an insurance system that allows the programme to run efficiently without owning facilities or incurring debt,” he said.
He noted that the scheme has already recorded significant milestones, including thousands of Caesarean sections carried out at no cost to beneficiaries.
“Currently, about 54,000 people have benefited. The programme is advancing steadily, and we encourage our people to take advantage of this opportunity,” Odimayo added.
Expanding Coverage to the Informal Sector
The health adviser also commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for making healthcare a priority, revealing that the state has expanded the Contributory Health Insurance Scheme to include the informal sector.
“This initiative is designed for people across all economic strata to access healthcare without facing catastrophic out-of-pocket spending,” he explained.
Odimayo said the government has further strengthened the health sector to meet the growing needs of residents, including the approval of additional healthcare personnel at various levels.
Tackling Malaria and Strengthening Facilities
In addressing malaria, Odimayo disclosed that the state government, in partnership with the Malaria Consortium, recently distributed about 2.5 million insecticide-treated nets and provided free malaria medications across the state.
He added that health facilities statewide have been adequately equipped with essential medical supplies to effectively manage malaria and other common illnesses.
“We appreciate Mr Governor for his unwavering support, encouragement, and for assembling a strong team committed to advancing the health and wellbeing of the people of Ondo State,” he said.
